One, or if not "The Best" sushi restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of eating at regularly. Seems like every city I visit, I try to find a sushi restaurant, but nothing compares to Umi Grill. I hear the same thing from so many people. All the wait staff & hostesses are extremely polite and professional. The owner, Chi, always comes out to our table to let us know he is so happy we have come in for dinner. The one thing I always notice, no matter how busy they are, they quickly clean the tables and it's always spotless. The fun and personalized party rooms can serve larger parties and they even have a private party room downstairs. I would recommend that anyone passing through Terre Haute - make it a point to stop in and try Umi. You may want to call and make reservations since they are usually always crowded.

We randomly stopped here for dinner on our way home to Indianapolis. It was very good food especially to be found in the middle of nowhere. We both had various sushi rolls and sides and all were good. The ambience was pretty much standard generic Asian décor - nothing bad, but nothing special either.

Umi Grill (formally Sushi Umi) is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Midwest. Why is it in Terre Haute, IN? Lord only knows. What I can tell you is that this sushi establishment would be right at home in NYC, LA, or Chicago. The prices are higher for the TH area, but the food you get is definitely worth the price. My suggestion is to skip the appetizers as the main courses are so good you don't want to risk being too full. Many of their best rolls aren't on the menu, so be sure to ask your server about them. The staff is super helpful and can provide a lot of insight into what you might want to try. They have the congenital sushi, which they do well, but why bother with that when you can try their speciality rolls! You will pay a little more, but it's well worth it! They have an assortment of cooked and raw sushi along with a full bar. The dinning area is open and very contemporary. If you go on a weekend call ahead to make reservations as an hour + wait time isn't uncommon for walk ins. Umi is a big name sushi restaurant in a small city, but that doesn't mean it goes unappreciated. If you're looking for big city quality sushi with legendary (Freedom of Religion Bill not withstanding) Hoosier Hospitality, try Umi Grill.

Terre Haute?? Find a way to make it here!! The food is great. The Tonkatsu Bento box was huge & delicious. All my hubby's rolls were great. I would go out of my way to come back, but I live in NYC and it's a little too far.

The Tuna Cubes with Avocado was just like Poké in Hawaii. Only with the best cut of Tuna, not the scraps like they make it with traditionally. No they don't use spicy oil on sushi but, they do on Poké. The spicy tuna roll was OK. The salmon crunch roll was good.

The atmosphere and food are exquisite. I have eaten here numerous times and been thoroughly pleased every visit.

Fresh food, great atmosphere. Try the spicy lovers role, dragon role or sunshine roll. If you enjoy raw sushi. Riley is the best server I've encountered while dining there. Great food and service pick Riley and you won't regret it. He's Great in customer service and maintaining customer satisfaction!!

It is run by a Chinese but not Japanese. Food is just fine. Price is relatively high compare to other places. Don t think it worth that high comment. You can have another wonderful meal for lower price in other Japanese restaurants. Nothing impressive about this place.

This is the best restaurant in Terre Haute. I read one review that didn't like the Dr. Singh. The chili oil, mango and tuna roll make for an absolutely fantastic combination! The ceveche is also a combination that is really, really good. My favorite is Tuna Cubes (raw tuna cubes &avacadoes marinated in a spicy oil/soy sauce)... probably my favorite dish of any restaurant anywhere!

Best sushi ever! Try the Integrity roll. I've never had a bad meal here. Service is great.

We just moved to Terre Haute (temporarily) from Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ and the thing I miss the most, besides the weather, is the food!! So imagine my surprise when I found this place and Yelp. I knew I had to try it. First - Service was excellent. Our server was so polite, friendly, outgoing, helpful, and accommodating. The restaurant itself is modern and chic - totally not expected in Terre Haute. Very hip. We were seated in a private booth, which would be great if the place was packed and we wanted privacy. But during lunch I think I'll request a table instead. So for lunch, we both got the Bento Boxes. I ordered the salmon teriyaki and he ordered the chicken teriyaki. The boxes come with the main entree, steamed rice, salad with ginger dressing, tempura, and a California hand roll. Because we wanted to try their other specialty rolls, the server suggested we replace the California rolls in our order with rolls of our choice at the higher cost - I thought this was a great suggestion and saved us money in the long run. The food was excellent. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the teriyaki sauce was subtle, yet flavorful. I normally don't care for teriyaki but I couldn't pass up the salmon Bento Box. One bento box per person is MORE than enough food. TRUST ME! And at only $11-17/person, you can't go wrong for lunch! You get to try a wide variety of food, including sushi, for a great price. And the quality was excellent. This is hugely unexpected for Indiana! So happy this place is right up the road from me. I plan on eating here many many more times.

Delicious, fresh, definitely NOT local seafood with a helpful and friendly staff makes this a wonderful gem in Terre Haute. So glad they are here! Sushi is great but so are their entrees. Been a half dozen times and it is always delicious!

  • S S.

So this is what good sushi in Indiana tastes like. I wasn't impressed with my tuna or salmon rolls. Service lacked also; waiter was very matter-of-fact. I was seated at the sushi bar and at a corner chair that was too close to the table behind me and the entrance to the kitchen. Had to move myself.

I had the spicy California roll, super white tuna nigiri, and a rainbow roll. As always, presentation is great and the food is delicious.

By far the vest place to eat in Terre Haute. EVERYTHING is amazing from the atmosphere to service to food quality....superb!!!

This is probably one of the best places to eat in Terre Haute. They have four booths, one for each season, that are very nice with privacy, but you usually have to call ahead and reserve one. The seats at the sushi bar are nice as well. They have fish tanks on each end of the sushi bar and I have to admit I feel a little bad, with the fish watching me eat raw fish. But, not bad enough not to enjoy the great food. It is pretty pricey for Terre Haute and not what I would want to pay everyday, but, it is a good treat and worth a few visits a month.

Neat place that used to inhabit a closed Dunkin' Donuts shop, but it did so well they had to upgrade to better digs. This is just a little gem of a sushi restaurant & in such an unlikely place. Landlocked here at the Crossroads of America, they still manage to turn out fantastic sushi & excellent tempura. It's a pretty place, too (don't let the location on busy 3rd Street, near 70, in an unremarkable square building fool you, it's quite nice inside).

  • Kyle K.

This has to be the best place to eat in Terre Haute. Granted, it is a different venue type for TH. I've never had anything bad from this place and always look forward to going!

  • Heidi C.

Chose to go to Umi based on YELP reviews & we were not dissapointed! We live in CA & eat Japanese food frequently this was some of the best we have had! All 4 dishes on the Umi flight were excellent, the teriyaki shrimp was the best I have ever had, miso soup was perfectly mild & not salty. The service was excellent!

  • Audrey B.

Great food, fantastic service. Only complaint was there isn't a menu to describe the rolls, but our waitress was very knowledgeable and gave several great suggestions. Good house sake and nice wine selection. Very cool atmosphere, nice private booths.

  • Andrea R.

Absolutely amazing! I did not expect to find this level and quality sushi while traveling around but this place is a serious contender for any sushi fusion restaurant at any level. The specialty rolls are out of this world. The ones with mango blew me away. You will not be disappointed. Give this place a shot!

I have been here twice for dinner. The ambience is nice and modern. The service tends to be a bit slow, but they give you plenty of time to go over the menu and to eat in peace. I have ordered the "hotpot" when it was offered as a seasonal special. It was more than enough for 2! The broth was very salty and sweet, but otherwise quite good! I have also ordered the Red Snapper and Teriyaki Chicken entrées. The fish was a little bland, but prepared well. The chicken was a tad dry, but passable overall. I've tried one of the sushi rolls (Number One) and it was excellent! Topped with avocado and tempura shrimp in the middle, it was a good combination of crunchy and creamy. I highly recommend this roll :-) Overall, the experience here has been good. I'll probably come back again in the future to try more sushi!

To be honest, I really like the Umi Grill. The food there is really lovely and creative. I've eaten there several time including when the place was called Sushi Umi and located in an Old Dunkin' Donuts building. Even then the sushi was fresh and delicious, which in my humble opinion isn't easy in the middle of land locked Indiana. The newer location is much more elegant and very contemporary and includes some very private booths if you want to get away from everything. When my wife and I go, I usually have the Ramen Noodles. Please don't mistake this dish with the the packets of dry noodles you buy for a buck at the grocery store and are the staple of many collage student pantries. This is a delicious and Unctuous broth full of umami. ( I have to through in a Culinary Term from time to time and this one fits the bill.) A good ramen takes care and time to create and you can taste the care that the chef put into his ramen. The Umi Grill's ramen is full of pork, veggies and noodles that were perfectly cooked and not mushy making the dish perfect for a cold winter evening. My wife, who until recently hasn't been much of a sushi eater, enjoys the Dr. Singh Special. This is a fiery rolled sushi with Mango, Lobster and shrimp served in a wonderful chili sauce is guaranteed to make your endorphins kick in. The only little complaint that kept this restaurant from getting full points is that from time to time the service seems a little slow. Other than that, those of us that live in Terre Haute are lucky to have a really good Japanese restaurant in town.

Ate here for the first time today. Had been wanting to after reading all the good reviews. Well the atmosphere, food and service were all EXCELLENT. I had the sauteed seafood and my husband had a steak (he's not much of a seafood or sushi eater). Both were excellent. All the seafood was very tender, flavorful, the saute sauce was great. He really liked his steak, I tasted it and I really like the spicy crust. We had a booth and we really liked the seclusion. Service was great, we never lacked for drink refills or anything else. Yes it was a little pricey but you get what you pay for. We will be back!

This is by far the BEST restaurant in Terre Haute. If you ever find yourself in this town, this is the place to be. I was a bit surprised at the quality here seeing as where this place is located. In the area, you will find numerous liquor stores, tattoo shops, gas stations - but not very many five star restaurants. The next best thing in this town is Applebees. In all seriousness though, being an avid sushi lover I was skeptical when my boyfriend suggested this place and I think...brought me, the Chicago-native sushi lover here for dinner. I have been to several great sushi places and have tasted the best of the best. I was thrilled that there is a hidden gem in this town. I know that I ordered a few things that were all really good, I apologize that I don't remember exactly. But wanting one more bite of goodness I did ask the waiter for a suggestion and he recommended the Dr. Singh special. I wish that I had just ordered this because it was huge, but it was by far the best sushi creation that I have ever tasted. The next time I go here, I will just order this and maybe some tuna cubes.

Umi is Yummy. I was only in Terre Haute one night, and their Yelp* rating did not disappoint.

Check out the Doc Singh! Get the half unless you're making a meal out of it. The combo rice they make is KILLA! I also get the beef tataki! This place is the best Sushi Joint I have been to ever. I've been to Cali, Vegas, East Coast, The gulf, NOLA.. and this is by far the best! Decor, service, quality, and the freshness is like he has an ocean in the back and he just skims the fishys right out and cooks it up! Keep it up Chi! OH! He also has a fish market in the back!

This is the best restaurant in town and probably best sushi joint in the midwest. The restaurant itself is spotless and has a very modern feel for it. There is general seating i the center area and private booths on the sides available with reservation. The staff is very friendly and can provide good recommendations if your a sushi newbie. Pretty good sake selection both hot and cold. I'm not a big sashimi person but the sushi rolls are very good. I highly recommend the Dr. Singh roll.

I came here in the late afternoon on a Thursday with friend for lunch. It wasn't too busy, but that's to be expected with the time of day I went. The service was outstanding and our server knew everything about the sushi I had questions about. The food... Wow! I lived in Washington, DC and I've eaten at some very very pricy 'high class' sushi restaurants. This place is on par if not better than most places ive eaten. I absolutely 100% recommend this place if you're looking for an outstanding experience from a top tier sushi restaurant.

If you haven't seen the new location for the former "Sushi Umi", you have to check it out. Same incredible Japanese cuisine, but in the most amazing atmosphere. See the SE corner of the building for the BRAND NEW Umi Fish Market... freshest seafood between here and Chicago! Private booths and an amazing party room in a what was previously the bank's main safe. Tell your friends... they'll think you're so cool!

I read the reviews and thought we were in for a treat! My girlfriend was visiting from the Virgin Islands, and we wanted a nice place to catch-up and great food. Plus, we both had been travelling and Terre Haute was a midpoint for us..... Well, the food was awesome. The service was horrible. I asked for utensils and by the time the server came back my appetizer was cold. I repeat the service was horrible. I asked for two separate checks so I could expense my meal, but I wanted to pay for both of them with my credit card. She ran the card through once not a problem, but throw away the individual receipts!!! When I asked her to reprint them as per my request, she preceeded to dig in the TRASH CAN AND TRY TO FIND THE RECEIPT. I told her "Honey, this is an authetic Coach handbag, does it look like I'm going to put a piece of garbage in my bag". BTW, I know she dug out the trash because I HAD TO GET UP TO GO TO THE BACK AND ASK FOR MY SERVER BECAUSE SHE DISAPPEARED. I always start tips at 20% and go up or down from there depending on service. Rarely do I leave less than 15%. I LEFT HER NADA. The first time ever I haven't left a tip. We went with the bento boxes - one shrimp and one salmon. The tempura shrimp, rice, salad, were delicious. It was a great value for the price. Everything was extremely fresh and well prepared. The ambiance was excellent, and the cozy booths seem to be a great place to take a date. I would caution about ordering the chicken as it was reather dry. I was extremely disappointed.

This is one of the best restaurants in the Midwest. The owner lives next to my cousin so I met him and his wonderful family long before I was able to talk my cousin into trying the food. Spectacular doesn't do it justice. Now every trip to Terre Haute must include Umi.

  • Bryan C.

It was ok, just unremarkable. A decent, although typical, menu and the atmosphere/decor was nice. However, I wasn't impressed by the quality of the fish. My meal had some fish that was starting to turn slighting (just slightly) slimy. Since I usually order pieces, the quality/freshness of the fish is critical. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but I've never had this issue with another joint right down the street so I probably won't be giving Umi a 2nd chance to change my opinion.

I was NOT expecting this place to be as good as it was. Afterall, it's the midwest which makes eating sushi risky. My boyfriend and I were floored. The decor and inside of the restaurant was super modern and trendy. We sat at the sushi bar so we could watch the amazing fish tank they had, but next time I'm going to reserve a booth, they were very private. Drinks were a little slow, but the saki selection was extensive. The rolls were fresh, better than most of the places I've eaten in L.A. The only roll I did not like was the cowboy roll, a california roll with filet minon. The filet minon just didn't seem to go with the sushi, but we knew it was a risk when we ordered it. Luckily, this is the closest sushi place to me as of now, so I'll be returning VERY often!

Based on reviews from Yelp, my wife and I made our first trip to the Umi Grill. To set the tone for this review, we considered it a personal victory that we only resorted to silverware once as we needed to split the last piece of beef. :) As first timers, we were a little intimidated by the menu. The first page has detailed descriptions of the various terms and preparation methods, but we still had some questions. Luckily, our hostess was very patient and knowledgeable. Her help really added to our experience. She took time to explain the various dishes and made helpful suggestions. They offer an extensive selection of cooked and uncooked sushi. The menu is also full of various beef, chicken, pork, duck, and other seafood dishes. Soups and salads round out the choices. In an effort to sample the most in a single trip, we chose to split the Umi Flight. This consisted of four separate entrees, beef, sea bass, shrimp, and scallops served separately. All of it was delicious. Our personal favorite was the shrimp, but none of it went to waste. :) We had a lot fun tasting the various foods and discussing the new flavors. I am hoping that on our next visit we will get to try the sushi. There is an extensive selection available. Our meal came with miso soup (spelling?) and a salad, both of which were excellent. We also ordered a fried vegetable appetizer. Again, the atmosphere and our hostess really added to the experience. If you are new to Japanese style dining, I suggest a time of day when the staff has some time to spend with you. Also, make sure you have time to enjoy the experience. Our service was excellent, but it took us a bit to figure out the menu and select our food. I wouldn't suggest bringing young children. I encourage anyone to give it try. Especially good for a date or night out away from the kids!

This is the absolute Best sushi restaurant around here. Their traditional Japanese 'okonomiyaki' is as good as any I had while living in Japan....Umi grill would fit in any upscale metropolitan neighborhood in the US, so to find it in Terre Haute is a Godsend. Five stars. Also, if you're making a recipe that calls for fresh fish, e.g. Seviche, I would get your fish here.

Impressive! Sushi as good as that u get in big cities! Try the Dr Singh ( sushi, shrimp with mangos) and Mexican roll specials. By far best restaurant in TH! Highly recommended

This is by far the best restaurant in Terre Haute. I haven't lived there in a few years, but when we visit it's our top priority. Beef Negemaki is great for starters. Hubby loves the cowboy roll. I usually go for the chop chop rolls and the # 1. House wine is good too! If you are looking for a nice restaurant in Terre Haute this is a must have. Aaron is a great waiter as well!

  • Diedre A.

The best sushi we have found, including Chicago. Beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. So surprised to find anything this good outside of a major port city. Love the baked scallop roll. And there is more seafood on the seafood salad than on most seafood plates.

Clean, tasteful and well decorated. Food is the best. Servers polite and know the menu. Probably Terre Hautes best restaurant.

As fresh as it gets when you're living no where near an ocean. When you step into Sushi Umi, you instantly feel the good karma. Perhaps its the rice-paper covered windows, or the carefully balanced feng shui, but it definitely prepares you for a good meal. There's a large selection of standards and inventive preparations. When it comes to sushi in Terre Haute, Sushi Umi is definitely the best.

I've had some great sushi (Boston, San Francisco, Portland) and was wary of a midwest (middle of Indiana) place. But I was pleasantly surprised by Umi. Decor and ambiance was nice. Dimmed lights, water features, and asian (of course) theme. A few private booth areas could make this a nice date night location. The main dining area is spacious and the place was clean (even in the bathrooms). We ordered miso and several sushi rolls and enjoyed all of the food. It was fresh and not fishy and well made (not falling apart). The waitress was helpful with answering questions and we enjoyed our evening. I wouldn't say it is spectacular (nor that it rivals those places I mentioned earlier) but it is definitely worth a visit in Terre Haute and the only place to get sushi in town. They also have several other options for a meal if you are not ready for sushi.

New location is great (just down the street from old loc.). Great atmosphere really clean and classy looking. Some of the best sushi I've had in the Midwest. Pricing was reasonable on most items. The lunch bento boxes are a great deal. I make sure and hit Sushi Umi whenever I'm in Terre Haute.

A very good restaurant in Terre Haute. Mediocre sushi, but the best you will find in Terre Haute. Tempura coating way too heavy. On my recent visit I noticed that sanitation behind the prep counter needs to be addressed.

Step into Umi and step out of Terre Haute...at least for an hour or two. The food is amazing, the ambiance is modern and chic, and the service is fantastic. It takes a while to get your food, but that's a good thing. The dishes are delicious and creative. Many "special" entrees are not on the menu, so ask your server what they recommend. You won't be disappointed.

A gem in Terre Haute. The sushi is fantastic, as well as their other food. Nice atmosphere, you can sit at the bar and watch the sushi chef if you want. Everytime I'm back in TH for homecoming I have to stop here. This is a great place to take a date, and did I mention the food is fantastic? Tasty sauces, attention to detail, beautiful stoneware, fresh and yummy! Go here if you haven't already!

I always come here when I'm visiting my hometown. It's one of the best sushi restaurants in Indiana (I'm serious). I struggle to find as good of sushi, especially at this price point, where I lived in Chicago or where I live now in Boston. I love the Dr. Singh, the verve roll, the number one roll, and the baked scallop roll. And their bento boxes and fish plates are always perfectly cooked and wonderfully huge portions. The staff is friendly and knowledgable and the owners are great. They also have a fish market where you can purchase fresh rolls and fish if you don't have time to dine (but you should make the time because the ambiance is lovely). Honestly can't say enough great things about this place-- it's a go to if you're in the area!

I've only been to Umi once (almost twice, but they were too packed for me to get in when I needed to), but I feel pretty confident in saying that I'm a fan. I don't have a lot of experience with sushi, but I found much of what I tried at Umi to be quite likable. And I absolutely LOVED their spicy sauce. So good.

  • Heather S.

We had an amazing meal at Umi Grill Sushi Bar! The seasonal special, a summer roll, which consisted of shrimp, mango, avocado, and organic lettuce wrapped in rice paper and served with a sweet chili oil was amazing!!! Seriously, they should consider making it a mainstay! We also got their spicy tuna rolls, which were good, but our favorite (apart from the summer roll), was their tempura asparagus roll. It was absolute heaven!!! We ordered a second round. It was that good!!! Umi Grill is a beautiful and romantic restaurant, perfect for a date, or for a special night out, or for business associates wanting a quiet atmosphere with excellent food! Service was incredibly attentive and personal. We loved it!

After hearing much good press about Umi I decided to go for dinner. My party of 1 was immediately seated at the sushi bar. My server brought me water and said he'd be right back to take me order. Well 15 mins later my water was gone and my server had not returned. Mind you I was the only person at the bar. Well I hope he knows where Old Country Buffet is because that's where I am. When I got up to leave a lady came to clean away my dishes. When she saw there were none I replied to her shocked facial expression...AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I AM LEAVING...NO FOOD! Guess I will never know how the food tastes but I know about the service...POOR!!

My wife and I were driving through and craving sushi, so we decided to try Umi. We had the Tuna Cubes, Gyoza Dumplings, and Dr. Singh's special. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste of all three! The tuna was fresh and creamy and the dumplings came with a ponzu sauce that we could not get enough of!

I am not a snob about anything in life except for sushi. As a self-proclaimed sushi snob, Umi Grill not only reaches the bar, it helped set it higher. This restaurant would be successful in any city in the country, yet it's a gem nestled in Terre Haute, IN. As for my favorite dishes, the Dr.Singh roll and the tuna cubes are to die for. Also, the saki is great too. Best food in Terre Haute by far!!!

Umi was a pleasant surprise! I came to terre haute for work and a colleague recommended this sushi place as a must try. Boy, was I skeptical. I gave it a shot and I would come back every time. The selection isn't the biggest I've seen but you will definitely find something you like. I had the Special roll with the white tuna on top of asparagus roll with hot chili oil and the regular salmon roll plus spicy tuna to get a baseline on the basic quality. The chili oil doesn't make the roll too spicy and the warm roll definitely melts in your mouth. I suggest to eat this before it gets cold. The salmon also sort of melted in your mouth, which it should, but the spicy tuna was just ok. I'll come back for my next trip and I may come twice in one week!

The food here was incredible. I'm from out of town and I was skeptical about sushi in Terre Haute but this place way exceeded my expectations. The food was incredible and we ate family style allowing us to try many options. I highly recommend the Dr. Singh special. It was a new twist on sushi incorporating melon into the mix. Also, our friends from in town knew to ask for the specials which they do not advertise. Make sure to ask for the specials even if they don't offer them up.

The restaurant interior is well-decorated and when it's not crowded, even tables in the main room are intimate enough. The service was good but not excellent -- there were a few minor mistakes and a level of familiarity that seems more appropriate in a family restaurant. Sushi is already a premium-priced commodity. The presumption is that you are paying for quality fish, skill in preparation, and -- generally -- presentation. All-in-all, though, the prices are simply too high at Umi for what you get -- even for a sushi restaurant -- and that's very disappointing. After having seen the prices, I expected the meal to have the finest ingredients and preparation as well as great presentation. I concede that the presentation of the meal was great. Everything was plated impeccably -- I have no complaint there. However, there were lots of other things wrong. The rice (sushi-meshi), which is vitally important to the flavor of the sushi, was not well-seasoned -- the sour and sweet flavors were almost completely missing and the rice grains were too dry in some of the items, leaving some hardened tips of rice grain to float around in the mouth. The laver (nori) was not of high quality, lacking the crispness, color, flavor and texture of the best laver -- thick, leathery and bumpy and with a slightly off flavor which affected the taste of everything with which it was prepared. The futomaki was passable, but given the quality of the laver and the rice, did not meet expectations, especially considering the inflated price. I won't go into the details of each ingredient of this roll, but suffice it to say they were all fine, but not exceptional, except, possibly, the egg. The tamago nigirizushi is the only thing that exceeded expectations. The egg was perfectly mixed with no marbling of white and yolk and sweetened just right. The layer of egg was quite tall against the rice, which put it in good proportion to the imperfectly-seasoned rice. The pickled vegetables (tsukemono) were -- for lack of a more charitable word -- gross. They each tasted off in their own way, but the onion, which did not seem like authentic rakkyōzuke, had an extremely off taste, something like a cross between a tin can and a moldy basement. Overall, they were not tasty and (to quote an old joke) "such small portions". The dinner salad was a nice mix of ingredients and they were all quite fresh. The dressing wasn't bad, but was in such great abundance that the last bits of the salad were drenched and therefore overpowered with the dressing's flavor. At the risk of repeating myself, the portion was quite small for the price. The smoked salmon in the Philadelphia roll had both a fishy flavor and a metallic flavor that drowned out the buttery, smoky flavors that one would expect. The cream cheese was applied in such abundance that it dominated the roll disagreeably. If you're thinking "Well, it's fish, it must have a fishy flavor" please understand that this is not the case. Fish with a "fishy" flavor (Japanese or not) generally tends to be because the fish has not been kept at the proper temperature -- in this case, either before or after it was smoke-cured. Smoked salmon, since it is preserved, does not require expensive transportation or storage in the way that most raw fish will, and so the purchase price of this fish is generally not as high as some of the other ingredients. While it is commonplace for most sushi restaurants not to have lower prices for items that don't require expensive fish (for instance, vegetarian rolls or egg rolls), they really should. The pricing of an item should correspond to the price of the ingredients and the cost of preparation. Unfortunately, many sushi places (including, apparently, this one) are pricing their dishes based on how chic sushi is considered rather then cost and skill. After hearing friends and other Yelper's talk this place up, my visit was a real disappointment, so I will probably explore other options in town and between Indy and Bloomington before returning to Umi. I'll let you know what I find. Sorry, Umi.

Delicious food and great atmosphere. Good service even though they were busy. My only note is that it is noisy: all hard surfaces make for a lot of reflection. I suggested they put some sound absorbing materials up to quiet things down. We couldn't hear the music until the place had emptied out. Highly recommended.

My fellow Yelpers got this one right. I thoroughly enjoyed the sushi I ordered, which was super fresh and well worth the price. We skipped the drinks, although the drink menu looked fun and had some interesting choices. I went for my old standby at Asian restaurants and had Jasmine green tea, which was refilled quickly whenever it was half way done. Actually, service here is excellent...very attentive and helpful, with everyone on the floor seeming to take responsibility for each table. I like teamwork, and they take it seriously here, so kudos to them for that! My partner only had good things to say about the house specialty fish dish, so we'll be returning.

Our first-time experience at Umi was easily a 5 star experience. Our server was extremely professional and very descriptive when explaining the menu offerings. Always a plus! We shared the lobster-scallop cakes for an appetizer. Then we opted for a variety of rolls and decided on the Number One, Cowboy, The Verve and Spicy California. All were vastly different from one another and surprisingly delicious. The presentation was different than most sushi restaurants and all had unique flavors and characteristics. Well done, Umi!

The quality and preparation of the food was, on the whole, just fine (although the white rice was a bit 1979 Chinese restaurant style long grain and not delicious sushi vinegared short grain). Unfortunately, the timing with which the kitchen released and prepared dishes made our pleasant and helpful server appear ham-fisted and ruined the dinner mojo. Everyone's food came at different times and that's a rookie mistake, kitchen. Nice decor, strange and wonderful creatures in the two small fish tanks by the sushi bar.

This place isn't just good for Terre Haute, IN. It's good for just about anywhere. I had pork dumplings for starters and they were good. Average really but the star was the sea bass. They sent out a delicious miso soup to start and followed it with my appetizer and finally my sea bass. It was a generous portion in a soy and ginger glaze served with a fantastic salad of perfectly ripe mango, tomatoes, avocado, asparagus and lettuce. Every component was perfect including the tomatoes. It's obvious the chef doesn't get this stuff off a Sysco truck. They definitely should list the price of this entree on the menu though as it really bummed me out when I got the check. It was $30.95. I probably would have skipped the dumplings. The service was excellent and I would definitely come back and try something else.

It is certainly laudable that Terre Haute has a quality sushi joint. Umi has a spectacular interior and great waitstaff. I've only had sushi on the east coast and I know that the quality drops the further one loves to the nation's interior. Nonetheless, Umi still served some nice plates. Only criticism is that a little too much is done. Let the sushi and sashimi do the talking. Case in point was the rainbow roll special recommended to us. Huge, but tasted like the unholy offspring of a vietnamese spring roll and a chimichanga. Lot of nice stuff but the appetizer was smothered in chili sauce. Too much. Ceviche was ok, but my recommendation is to stay with the tried and true, even the tempura. I really like Umi. It's arguable that Umi is Terre Haute's best (I bow to you, Mogger's), but a strong argument could be made. Look forward to returning.

Easily the best sushi in Terre Haute. In fact I would say it's really the only quality sushi in the city. The special rolls are unique and delicious! Only problem is since there are no other quality options they can charge whatever they like and definitely fall on the pricier side.

First of all, I give this place 10 stars and anyone that says otherwise, can just go....well, whatever. You get my point. I used to live in Terre Haute and started frequenting the Umi back when it was in the old Dunkin Donuts building. I have been an ultimate fan ever since! This was literally close to 13 years ago. I moved to Indy in 2010 and have YET to find a sushi restaurant here that tops Umi and I have tried, very hard. Enough said, right? What I love.....1) The ambiance. You don't realize you are in Terre Haute. 2) The service. They kill it. 3) The freshness and uniqueness of the food. Even if you don't like seafood or sushi, please join your friends when they go here. You WILL find something on the menu and it WILL be awesome. 4) The Connie, Verve, Dr. Singh and Chop Chop rolls. LOVE. HEAVEN. 5) Even though I don't even live in Terre Haute any longer, I ALWAYS spend my birthday week dinner here. It is a must. It is a given. Gotta have Umi for my birthday! 6) The birthday boat dessert rocks. Thank you, Umi Grill for like....IDK...maybe 6 or 7 of them for myself and dozens of others for my friends. DO NOT pass this place up if you are a sushi lover and you are in the Terre Haute area. I mean it. It is big city sushi joint in a smaller town and they do it up WELL! It will NOT disappoint. I miss you much, Umi Grill. See you next Saturday!

Chose to go to Umi based on YELP reviews & we were not dissapointed! We live in CA & eat Japanese food frequently this was some of the best we have had!

My favorite restaurant in Terre Haute! It rivals many sushi restaurants I've been to in Indianapolis, this fish is always fresh and the staff is very accommodating and helpful. Love it!

Awesome and fresh. Food is fantastic, wait staff is 4star. Worth the 90 min commute for the best Sushi in the midwest.

Delicious, fresh, definitely NOT local seafood with a helpful and friendly staff makes this a wonderful gem in Terre Haute. So glad they are here! Sushi is great but so are their entrees. Been a half dozen times and it is always delicious!

The best sushi we have found, including Chicago. Beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. So surprised to find anything this good outside of a major port city. Love the baked scallop roll. And there is more seafood on the seafood salad than on most seafood plates.
